Macau Kitchen - Progressive Macanese Cuisine

Tucked away on St. Leonard’s Street in Edinburgh, Macau Kitchen - Progressive Macanese Cuisine is not just a place to eat-it’s a culinary conversation between Portuguese, Chinese, and Southeast Asian traditions, all wrapped into a cozy, inviting experience. If you're unfamiliar with Macanese cuisine, it’s a beautiful fusion born in Macau, and Macau Kitchen serves it with flair, heart, and a contemporary twist.

From the moment you walk in, you get the sense that this place doesn’t follow the typical path. There’s no flash or fuss, just a warm, welcoming space where small plates shine, desserts steal the show, and even the tea service feels considered. It’s perfect for solo diners looking to explore, or for friends sharing an eclectic table full of color and spice.

Start with the Bolinhos de Bacalhau, crispy salted codfish cakes that manage to stay tender inside with a golden, crunchy shell. They’re served in bite-size perfection, and they disappear fast. Pair them with a cup of Homemade Iced Lemon Tea-it’s not overly sweet, and the tart citrus zing balances out the richness of the fried starters.

One of the most talked-about dishes here is the Chef’s Spicy Crispy Pork. The pork is tender but cloaked in a seriously addictive crust, and the heat doesn’t just slap-it lingers. It’s not burn-your-mouth hot, but it’ll wake up your palate in the best way. Next to it, you might want something soothing, like the Casquinhas, a delicate dish of seafood baked into scallop shells with a creamy sauce and breadcrumb topping. It’s comfort food, done with elegance.

For those chasing plant-based flavor, Vegan Duck is a must-try. The texture hits the mark, and it’s cooked with the same level of intensity and depth as its meaty counterparts. Add a side of House Salad, and you’ve got a fresh, herby counterbalance that helps round out the plate.

But the bold flavors don’t stop there. One standout that deserves applause is the African Chicken-a dish you won’t find just anywhere. It’s rich, smoky, slightly nutty, and comes cloaked in a sauce that hints at its Portuguese roots while landing firmly in its Macanese identity. You’ll want bread to mop it up, trust me.

Another dish that pushes boundaries is the Bak Kut Teh-a herbal pork rib soup more commonly seen in Malaysian kitchens, but here, it holds its own on the fusion table. The broth is deep and restorative, the kind that feels like it’s doing good things for your body while still being totally indulgent.

Now, let’s talk desserts-because at Macau Kitchen, they don’t just finish the meal, they elevate it. Pastéis de Nata, or Portuguese custard tarts, are clearly a highlight. But these aren’t your average high-street tarts. The pastry is flaky like phyllo, with just the right balance of buttery layers, and the custard is lightly caramelized on top, with a silky-smooth center that tastes like sunshine in a bite. There’s also a version called Portuguese Nata and another named simply Perfect-a bold name, but fair game considering how fast they fly off the plate.

If you’re after something cooler or more refreshing, grab a Hot Lemon Tea (yes, hot tea can be refreshing) or go back to that Homemade Iced Lemon Tea-seriously, it’s worth a second round. Coffee lovers aren’t left behind either, with a full-service offering that includes bold espresso and mellow pours for those slow lunches or late dinners.

Service-wise, the restaurant caters mostly to dine-in and takeaway. There’s no delivery option, which honestly makes sense-this is food you want to eat fresh and hot, not something that should sit in a box. The vibe is laid-back but attentive, and though the space doesn’t offer a wheelchair-accessible car park or toilet, the entrance and seating areas are designed to accommodate those who need mobility access.

Whether you're a curious foodie, a solo adventurer in search of new tastes, or someone looking for a vegan-friendly place with a twist, Macau Kitchen - Progressive Macanese Cuisine is full of flavor surprises. It’s the kind of spot you stumble upon once and end up telling your friends about for weeks.

Four of us visited on May 9 2025 and it was an unforgettable meal! We tried a wide variety of dishes and our waitress did an impeccable job describing the flavors and also got us excited about the meal. It was easy to tell that she believed in what was being served. The Tamarind Cumin Lamb special was everyone's favorite. The space itself was small but very inviting. We can't recommend this place enough!

This was hands down the best meal I’ve had in Edinburgh! The three of us left completely full and satisfied. The owner and staff were incredibly kind and welcoming, and the quality of the food was outstanding. Having lived in Macau for many years, I can confidently say the flavors here are truly authentic. The atmosphere of the restaurant was also lovely, making the whole dining experience even more enjoyable. Definitely will be coming back

I was recommended by my friend Sean and we’re very happy we finally got to visit this place! The octopus salad and crispy duck are our favourites and every dish we tried had a nice surprising touch of spices and flavour. I wish this place existed when I was a student in Edinburgh, will definitely come back again.

The food here is excellent for Edinburgh standards. Octopus salad was basically a ceviche and done quite well, nice chew Proper flavours for the curry of the coconut crispy duck, and the fried duck was brined correctly. Delicious Golden ckn was alright, deep fried ckn and potatoes, in a golden sauce which was unique tasting and quite decent, not sure what they put inside but they mentioned tamarind as one of the ingredients. The special main of the day was this stir fry, of ckn thigh slices which were nice and pork sausage. The flavours were quite complex, but this isn't done in the traditional wok hey style so it's hard for me to judge if it's well executed. Nonetheless, pretty decent
